Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Portland Yard, Garden, and Patio Show Part 2: The plant vendors

While the gardens at the Portland show were a bit of a disappointment for gardeners, there were still a lot of plants to be seen at the numerous plant vendor spaces and at the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon educational tables.

N & M Herb Nursery Outlet from Hubbard, Oregon always brings a nice mix of interesting plants to the show!

Aloes in bloom

The first combination planting that I've seen using Medinilla.

I considered getting one since they are supposed to remain in bloom for five months but, although they're interesting, they still remind me of a large upside-down flowering salvia.

Heuchera 'Rio' from Blooming Advantage/Blooming Junction is a riot of color. Heucheras have won my heart because of their evergreen foliage in so many beautiful colors.

Vertical gardening!

Sedum Chicks are at again!

What a pleasure to see the Little Prince of Oregon in person.  I've admired his countenance on the labels of fab plants for quite a while!

This guy gets around!

Ryan and Mark reprised their fancy facial "hair" creations from the Farwest Show.

Mark was taking a break.

Thank goodness that tillandsias are still so popular as I love them!|

Youngblood, a wholesale nursery, has  beautiful plants!

A little piece of British Columbia in the heart of Portland!

The Hardy Plant Society of Oregon does a great job of creating these tables of cut flowers and plants currently in bloom.  For someone new to the area or new to gardening, this is an amazing service. For everyone, it's a treat to see so many gorgeous plants!

Hellebores!

"Happiness is shopping for plants."  It's like they know me!

Echiveria 'Ebony'

Cistus brought some thorny characters!

Some softer ones as well, like this Prunus mume 'Dawn.'

Dancing Oaks' table was packed with treasures.   One day, I'll plan a trip to see their nursery in person!

There were many other great plant vendors, including Rare Plant Research but I didn't photograph them all.

I bought a screaming pink Cordyline (forgot the variety)  and a Lunaria 'Rosemary Verey.'  My goal this year is to buy a lot fewer impulse plants.  We'll see how long that lasts.

Happy weekend and happy gardening.  Go out and buy some more plants!

  1. My goal this year is to buy fewer plants too. My budget took a bad hit last year, and I have to rein things in. I have plenty that still need to get in the ground, and I'm already behind in my cleanup out there, so I don't need to give myself any more work. I've fallen out of love with my Tillandsias, do you want mine?

    1. I can never say no to plants and Tillandsias fit in all over the greenhouse so I'd love them.

  2. Happiness IS shopping for plants! Not necessarily buying, but definitely shopping for... Its a challenge to pace myself; it's only February after all.
That "facial hair" is a riot! It took me back to the movie 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou'.

    1. You're right Chava, shopping is as much fun as buying! I get the same thrill selling someone else on a plant as buying it myself!

  3. There are a lot of great gardens and nurseries in the Portland and Willamette Valley area. I grew up there, but since my mother passed four years ago, I have not been back much. I need to plan a trip.

    1. Oh yes, Linda! A trip to the valley of plant treasures should happen!

  4. By comparison to the last show I attended here, I think you did very well with your vendors!

    1. Portland's show had more plant vendors than the Seattle show but both shows were wonderful!

  5. Fun run down of the plant vendors, and a nice reminder that even though I complain and the shrinking number of nurseries at the show we've still got it pretty good here.

  6. Love that vertical planter and all the stuff from the Sedum chicks! Very fun! I've never seen a combination planter with a Medinilla either. I got one for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day a couple years ago. It did bloom for a long time and she absolutely loved it. Sadly it died despite her very green thumb, and we haven't been able to find another one. Not very common here I guess!

    1. I just saw a few more at a local nursery at an even lower price and with color showing on the buds but decided to pass.

  7. When I was in retail, I began buying from Youngblood. We always got their truck in about this time of year, and it was one I anxiously awaited, like unwrapping Christmas presents.

    1. Unpacking shipments was one of my favorite parts of working retail (gift store.) Working in plant retail would be even more exciting!

  8. I love your review of the vendors, the exhibits are of course fantastic, but the vendors are sooo tempting especially when your in that mood to take something home.
I don't know if I can support you on the 'less impulse buys' nonsense. Not supporting your local retailers is kind of selfish, and I don't think you're the selfish type.

    1. Thank you for pointing this out. One wouldn't want to be so selfish! It's our duty to buy plants and support local retailers!

  9. You always see things that I miss. You definitely need to make the pilgrimage to Dancing Oaks. Sounds like a good excuse for a car caravan with all our bloggin buds.
