I'm kicking myself for not checking the prices on these yuccas but not needing another, I just appreciated seeing them.
Most of the perennial selection resides here. Notice the Itoh peonies in the lower right. Five gallon pots, huge plants - $59.00. The same plants sell for $100.00 at other nurseries.
There are a couple of really huge hoop houses filled with annuals, hanging baskets, etc. Also quite inexpensive.
It's been quite a while since I've grown petunias but seeing these gorgeous colors sure made me think about picking up a few.
When I was a kid, a lady across the street from our school grew bi colored petunias. I thought they were pretty special.
These hostas with wavy edges were new to me.
Behind the main building one finds grasses, shrubs, and trees. This picture shows only about 1/4 of the space.
Round the other side are rhododendrons, fruit trees, and Acer palmatums.
One gallon sizes at the far end are $10.00, the larger ones in the foreground are $19.95.
Means is not a specialty nursery but they have a huge selection of garden staples at very reasonable prices. In addition, they also usually have a certain item that they've just received a truckload of and are selling at an embarassingly low price. On one visit, topiary conifers (basket shaped or spiral) 1 gallon for 5.00. You can fill a car to the gills for under a hundred dollars. What's not to love? Both Alison and I found some fun stuff here.
Still in the plastic wrap on a wood pallet were 10 gallon Trachycarpus fortunei which were about 10 feet tall. (99.95) Such a bargain. Let's see, If I fold down the passenger side seat lay it down diagonally... Do you suppose Alison would mind being tied to the roof of the car?
What????!!!!! The prices on the acers make me want to drive there to get one! Guess that wouldn't be feasible, but my goodness! The prices of plants have gotten almost unreasonable here. I have walked away from many plants lately just due to the high cost. How wonderful to have found a nursery that stocks beautiful plants at fabulous prices.
ReplyDeleteI know, right? Means is a great place to visit for great buys!
DeleteIs it bad of me that I've never been there :-( I guess if I ever find space for a Japanese Maple, I know where to go now...what a deal!
ReplyDeleteI've never been either! I smell a road trip in our future . . .
DeleteThey're just across the highway from the road that goes to Joy Creek & there's usually a few things that are just perfect to fill in a bare spot in July, replace a failed annual pot, etc. Later in the year, they usually have large blooming brugmansias in ornamental pots for twenty bucks. Perfect place to inexpensively spiff up the garden before the garden club comes for tea, cucumber sandwitches, and to talk disparagingly about your skills as a gardener on their way home.
DeleteYou two could have a blast doing the highway 30 triptych. June is a perfect time because, after leaving Cistus, you can pick up some freshly picked strawberries on Sauve Island to munch on as you travel to Means and Joy Creek.
Part of the fun for me is that "you never know" aspect. Sometimes there's nothing of note but sometimes Agave parryi for $4...
ReplyDeleteI fear that this time there was nothing except for the huge Trachycarpus fortunei that really stood out. I still got plants because they were good looking and inexpensive (hostas, begonias, but the Agave parryi for $4.phenomenon did not occur. Fortunately there's a whole summer of free weekdays (well 7 weeks) to plan another trip!
DeleteI really wish I had known about this place when I first put in the bones of my garden 3+ years ago. I did get some great buys here.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to our next trip!
DeleteI walked out of Portland Nursery empty-handed yesterday, because I kept thinking "geez, I'd better check at Means before plunking down 30 bucks for this or that". Of course my chances of finding the same special plants are slim, but I'd feel like a dope for not trying. I'll still feel like a dope if I go back and they're gone, but "oh well" is my dopey motto.
ReplyDeleteSince you live so close to Means, you could always check there before going on a plant expedition. You're in good company! (Bashful, Grumpy, Doc, Happy, Sleepy...)
DeleteNice! Not crazy about Japanese Maples, but that is a lot of plant for $40! I just paid that much for an Aronia melanocarpa that was three feet high.
ReplyDeleteYikes! A well grown 3' Chokeberry is certainly worth that but I love to find bargains. On the other hand haven't we all paid way too much for something that we've never seen before or just had to have only to find it at a quarter of the price elsewhere?
DeleteI love a good deal on plants and I love, love, love those hostas!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya! One of those hostas came home with me.
